About Color Picker

The Color Picker lets you choose a colour visually or by code and instantly see it in HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK. Use it to find the exact value for a design, convert a colour from one format to another, or grab a colour from anywhere on your screen with the eye dropper where your browser supports it.

Recently used colours are kept in a history, and built-in palettes give you starting points for combinations that work well together.

How to use the Color Picker

  1. Click the colour swatch to open the picker, or type a HEX code such as #1e90ff.
  2. Press Random if you want inspiration.
  3. Read the HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK values and copy the one you need.
  4. Use the Eye Dropper (in supported browsers) to pick a colour from any part of your screen.
  5. Click a colour in Recent Colors or in the palettes to return to it.

What it can do

Five colour formats

HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK are shown together and stay in sync.

Eye dropper

Sample a colour from a website, image or app window on your screen (Chromium-based browsers).

Colour history

Recently chosen colours are listed so you can pick up where you left off.

Palettes

Preset palettes help you build harmonious colour schemes.

When it is useful

  • Finding the HEX code of a brand colour from a screenshot.
  • Converting an RGB value from design software to HSL for CSS.
  • Choosing a colour scheme for a website or presentation.
  • Getting a CMYK approximation for print briefs.

Good to know

  • The eye dropper API is available in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers but not in Firefox or Safari.
  • CMYK values are mathematical conversions from RGB. Printed colour depends on inks, paper and profiles, so confirm with your printer.
  • Colours can look different on different screens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How do I convert HEX to RGB?
Enter the HEX code, for example #FF5733, and the RGB values (255, 87, 51) appear next to it. The formats stay in sync.
Q.What is the difference between HSL and HSV?
Both describe colour by hue, saturation and a third value. HSL uses lightness, where 50% is the pure colour; HSV uses value (brightness), where 100% is the brightest version of the colour.
Q.Why is the eye dropper missing?
It depends on the EyeDropper API, which is supported in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers but not in Firefox or Safari.
Q.Are the CMYK values exact for printing?
No. They are mathematical conversions from RGB. For accurate print colour, ask your printer for their profile or use design software with colour management.
Q.Is my colour history saved?
Recent colours are kept in the page while you use it.
Q.Can I pick a colour from an uploaded image?
Use the eye dropper over the image on your screen, or open the image in your browser and sample from there.
