About JSON Formatter

The JSON Formatter checks and reformats JSON in your browser. Paste minified or messy JSON and click Beautify to get clean, indented output that is easy to read, or click Minify to strip whitespace for compact transport. If the JSON is invalid, the tool tells you instead of silently failing.

It is aimed at developers and analysts who work with API responses, configuration files and data exports. The editor shows a sample so you can see how it works, and you can download the result as a .json file.

How to use the JSON Formatter

  1. Paste your JSON into the editor, or click Sample to load an example.
  2. Click Beautify to pretty-print with indentation, or Minify to remove whitespace.
  3. If the tool reports Invalid JSON format, look for common syntax errors (trailing commas, single quotes, missing brackets) and try again.
  4. Click Download to save the result as a file, or copy it from the editor. Clear empties the editor.

What it can do

Beautify

Indents and line-breaks JSON so nested objects and arrays are easy to follow.

Minify

Removes unnecessary whitespace to reduce size for production use.

Validation

Detects malformed JSON such as missing commas, quotes or brackets.

Local and private

Data is processed in your browser, so API responses with sensitive values stay on your device.

When it is useful

  • Reading a compressed API response during debugging.
  • Checking a configuration file for syntax errors before deploying.
  • Minifying a JSON payload to save bandwidth.
  • Cleaning up exported data for documentation or code review.

Good to know

  • Strict JSON requires double quotes around keys and strings, and does not allow trailing commas or comments. JavaScript-style objects with single quotes will be rejected.
  • Very large files may slow the browser. For multi-megabyte JSON use a desktop editor.
  • Beautifying does not change the data, only the whitespace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is the difference between Beautify and Minify?
Beautify adds indentation and line breaks for readability. Minify removes all unnecessary whitespace to make the file as small as possible. The data itself is identical.
Q.Why does my JSON show an error?
Common causes are a trailing comma, single quotes instead of double quotes, unquoted keys, a missing bracket, or comments, none of which are allowed in strict JSON.
Q.Is my JSON sent to a server?
No. Parsing and formatting happen in your browser.
Q.Can it format very large JSON files?
It works for typical files. Very large documents may be slow in the browser; use a desktop tool for those.
Q.Does it sort keys or change values?
No. It keeps the order and values exactly as they were.
Q.Can I validate JSON without formatting?
Click Beautify; if there is no error, the JSON is valid.
Q.Does it support JSON5 or JSONC?
No, only standard JSON as defined by RFC 8259.
