About PDF to Word
PDF to Word converts a PDF into an editable .docx file that you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. It is intended for the common situation where you receive a document as a PDF and need to change the text, reuse a table, or update a template.
Unlike our merge, split and compress tools, this conversion is done on a server by the CloudConvert service, because accurate layout reconstruction is too heavy to do reliably in a browser tab. Your file is uploaded for the conversion and then deleted after it completes.
How to use the PDF to Word
- Click the upload area and choose a PDF (up to 50 MB).
- Click Convert and wait while the file is uploaded and processed. Larger files take longer.
- When the conversion finishes, download the .docx file.
- Open it in Word or Google Docs and check the formatting, especially tables and unusual fonts.
What it can do
Editable output
Text is returned as editable Word text rather than a picture of the page.
Images and layout
Images and basic formatting such as headings, lists and tables are carried over where the converter can detect them.
Files removed afterwards
Uploaded files are deleted from the conversion service once the job is done.
Daily allowance
The free tier allows up to 25 conversions per day with files up to 50 MB.
When it is useful
- Updating a CV, quotation or contract that you only have as a PDF.
- Copying a table out of a report into a Word document.
- Converting lecture notes or papers so you can quote and annotate them.
- Reusing a form layout to create a new version.
Good to know
- Because the file is uploaded for conversion, avoid using it for documents you are not allowed to share with a third-party processor.
- Complex layouts (multi-column magazines, heavy graphics) rarely convert perfectly. Expect some manual cleanup.
- Scanned PDFs are images of text. Unless the converter runs OCR on them, the Word file may contain pictures rather than editable text.
- Fonts that are not installed on your computer will be replaced in Word.
