Text to Speech

Listen to any text read aloud with your device's built-in voices, and download the audio as an MP3 or WAV file.

About Text to Speech

Text to Speech reads any text aloud using the voices built into your browser and operating system. Paste a paragraph, choose a voice, adjust the speaking rate and pitch, and press play. You can pause, resume and stop at any time.

It is helpful for proofreading by ear, listening to long articles while you do something else, practising pronunciation, and for people who find text easier to absorb when it is spoken. The available voices depend on your device and browser, so a phone, a Mac and a Windows PC may each offer a different list.

How to use the Text to Speech

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Choose a voice from the dropdown. Voices are listed with their language.
  3. Adjust Rate to speak faster or slower, and Pitch to raise or lower the voice.
  4. Press play to start listening. Use pause to hold your place and Stop to cancel.

When it is useful

  • Proofreading an essay or email by listening for awkward phrasing.
  • Listening to an article or study notes hands-free.
  • Checking how a script, announcement or caption sounds when spoken.
  • Language practice: hearing pronunciation of text in another language.

Good to know

  • Voice quality varies. Some devices have natural-sounding premium voices, others only basic ones.
  • If the voice list is empty, your browser may still be loading voices. Wait a moment or reload the page.
  • Very long text may be cut off by some browsers. Read it in sections if playback stops.
  • Check the licence terms before using synthesised voices commercially.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Why do I see different voices on different devices?
The tool uses the voices provided by your browser and operating system, so each device has its own set.
Q.Is my text sent to a server?
For playback, the voices run on your device, so your text is not uploaded.
Q.Why is there no sound?
Check your volume and that the tab is not muted. If no voices are listed, reload the page and wait for voices to load. Some browsers require a click before audio can play.
Q.Can I change the speed?
Yes. The Rate slider makes speech slower or faster, and Pitch changes how high or low the voice sounds.
Q.Which languages are supported?
Whatever languages your device voices cover. Many systems include English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Arabic and more; install extra voices in your system settings if needed.
Q.Why does it stop in the middle of a long text?
Some browsers limit how much text a single speech request can contain. Split the text into smaller parts.
Q.Is it free?
Yes, there is no account or charge.
