About Word Counter

The Word Counter counts words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type or paste, and updates every number instantly. Beside the text box it estimates reading time and speaking time and lists your most frequently used words, which makes it equally useful for meeting an essay limit, trimming a social post, or checking that a keyword is not overused.

Because the analysis happens in your browser, your text is never uploaded. A toolbar also lets you switch the text between UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case and Sentence case without leaving the page.

How to use the Word Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the large text box.
  2. Read the live counts for words, characters, sentences and paragraphs at the top.
  3. Check Reading Time (based on 200 words per minute) and Speaking Time (130 words per minute).
  4. Look at Top Keywords to see which words you repeat most, ignoring very short words.
  5. Use the case buttons or Clear when you need to reformat or start again.

What it can do

Live statistics

Words, characters (including spaces), sentences and paragraphs update with every keystroke.

Reading and speaking time

Estimates assume about 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for speaking aloud.

Top keywords

Shows the five most frequent words longer than three letters, a quick check for repetition.

Case tools

Convert the text to upper, lower, title or sentence case in one click.

When it is useful

  • Keeping an essay or assignment within a required word range.
  • Fitting a meta description, bio or social post into a character limit.
  • Estimating how long a speech or video script will take to deliver.
  • Checking a blog draft for keyword repetition before publishing.

Good to know

  • A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, so "well-known" counts as one word and "e.g." as one.
  • Sentences are counted by terminal punctuation (full stop, question mark, exclamation mark). Abbreviations and decimal numbers can slightly inflate that figure.
  • Character count includes spaces and line breaks. Subtract them yourself if a limit excludes spaces.
  • The top keyword list ignores words of three letters or fewer and is not a full SEO density analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How does the word counter decide what counts as a word?
It splits the text on whitespace, so any group of characters between spaces or line breaks is one word. Hyphenated words and contractions count as one.
Q.Does the character count include spaces?
Yes. The Chars figure counts every character, including spaces and line breaks.
Q.How is reading time calculated?
Word count divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute.
Q.Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Q.Is there a maximum length?
There is no fixed limit. Extremely long texts may slow your browser slightly.
Q.Can it count words in other languages?
It works for languages that separate words with spaces. For languages such as Chinese or Japanese, the word count will not be meaningful, though the character count still works.
Q.What does Top Keywords show?
The five most frequent words that are longer than three letters, with a count for each.
